Luis Elizondo

Former Pentagon counterintelligence official, disclosure advocate

Luis Elizondo is a former US Department of Defense counterintelligence official who became one of the most visible figures in the modern disclosure push. He says he ran the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP), a Pentagon effort to study unexplained aerial encounters, before resigning in 2017 over what he described as excessive secrecy and official indifference to the issue.

After leaving, Elizondo helped bring the Navy encounter videos and the program itself to public attention, work that fed the December 2017 New York Times reporting that reopened the subject in the mainstream. He later joined To The Stars Academy alongside Christopher Mellon and Hal Puthoff, and published a 2024 memoir, Imminent.

Elizondo's exact role is contested. The Pentagon has at times disputed that he led AATIP or that the program had the remit he describes. That dispute is part of his story rather than a footnote to it. He sits here as a central, and genuinely debated, figure in how the phenomenon returned to official conversation.
